The temptation to steal is ubiquitous. Images surround us and are there for the taking, with piracy are a key mode of consumption. Whether as a kind of rebellious normlessness – a symptom of a late-capitalist alienation – or a rather more buoyant participation, stealing (looting, copying, sampling) is pervasive. SLOPES’ inauguralKnock-Off Show, presents artworks from local and international artists and investigates how contemporary artists appropriate, rip-off, knock-off, re-invent, imitate or downright copy existing artworks. The exhibition updates a history of Australian appropriation art discernible from the 1980’s and discusses ways artists build on ideas and themes in relation and in response to artworks made by their peers, contemporaries and predecessors.   Image: Jon Campbell, Pure Bewdy2011, enamel and acrylic paint on board, 40 x 30cm, courtesy the artist and KalimanRawlins, Melbourne (after John Baldessari’s Pure Beauty, 1966 – 68)
